Natural Detox Diet

for Better Skin.

Detox and get better skin! Our skin is the body’s largest organ. Pollutants from the environment and toxins from our diet can cause our complexion to suffer. No fret! Start by introducing a detoxification diet in your routine. Detoxification improves overall well being, skin and has many health benefits. It may seem daunting but a few small changes to our diet can greatly improve the look and feel of our skin.

1. Cut back on refined sugar.

Eating too much of refined sugar causes a reaction called glycation (a process where the sugar in our bloodstream attaches to protein molecules and forms harmful molecules called advanced glycation end-products) which damages the surrounding proteins like collagen and elastin that keeps our skin firm and springy.  Some tips to help reduce intake:

  • Limit added sugar in your diet. According to American Heart Association, the maximum amount of added sugars we can take per day is 100 calories (est. 6 teaspoons) for women and 150 calories (est. 9 teaspoons) for men. Of course, try to eat lesser than this.
  • Be mindful of sugars hiding in ready-to-eat foods. Always check the nutrition label for the breakdown of sugar, keeping in mind that 4g is equivalent to 1 teaspoon of sugar.
  • Avoid products that contain high fructose corn syrup, which is popular in sodas, flavored drinks, packaged breads, crackers, and other snacks.
2. Choose meat and dairy products wisely.

Having a protein-rich diet is important to detoxification. If possible, try selecting grain-fed meat and organic products. Some smart protein choices for detoxifying your skin include:

  • Grain-fed beef and poultry
  • Organic dairy products
3. Opt for healthier fats.

Unhealthy fats, like saturated and trans fats, should be avoided. Ingesting healthy fats is important for a detoxifying diet, which helps the body absorb essential vitamins to maintain or restore an ideal hormone balance.  Try eating some of the following:

  • Salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which can improve skin elasticity and help prevent wrinkles.
  • Olive oil instead of other oils.
  • Healthy Nuts and seeds for snacking.
4. Eat lots of alkaline-rich fruits and vegetables.
Fresh fruits and vegetables promote alkalinity the most. Alkaline minerals like calcium, potassium, and magnesium are what keep our skin, hair, teeth, and bones strong and health.
Some of the top picks include: Broccoli, mushrooms, tomatoes, avocado, celery, Pears, Apple, Spinach, Bananas and Watermelon.
5. Drink lots of water.
Drinking water throughout the day is important to flush out toxins from our skin and body. Hydration is important to keep our body balanced and complexion clear. Aim to drink 8 – 10 eight-ounce glasses of water each day.
