1. Cut back on refined sugar.
Eating too much of refined sugar causes a reaction called glycation (a process where the sugar in our bloodstream attaches to protein molecules and forms harmful molecules called advanced glycation end-products) which damages the surrounding proteins like collagen and elastin that keeps our skin firm and springy. Some tips to help reduce intake:
- Limit added sugar in your diet. According to American Heart Association, the maximum amount of added sugars we can take per day is 100 calories (est. 6 teaspoons) for women and 150 calories (est. 9 teaspoons) for men. Of course, try to eat lesser than this.
- Be mindful of sugars hiding in ready-to-eat foods. Always check the nutrition label for the breakdown of sugar, keeping in mind that 4g is equivalent to 1 teaspoon of sugar.
- Avoid products that contain high fructose corn syrup, which is popular in sodas, flavored drinks, packaged breads, crackers, and other snacks.
Having a protein-rich diet is important to detoxification. If possible, try selecting grain-fed meat and organic products. Some smart protein choices for detoxifying your skin include:
- Grain-fed beef and poultry
- Organic dairy products
Unhealthy fats, like saturated and trans fats, should be avoided. Ingesting healthy fats is important for a detoxifying diet, which helps the body absorb essential vitamins to maintain or restore an ideal hormone balance. Try eating some of the following:
- Salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which can improve skin elasticity and help prevent wrinkles.
- Olive oil instead of other oils.
- Healthy Nuts and seeds for snacking.
